Red Sensation Pear

Pyrus communis 'Red Sensation'

This variety of pear has a similar shape to the Bartlett - in fact, it's a natural mutation of Bartlett - but with a higher sugar content. Its bright-red skin and medium-to-large size makes it a dramatic dessert pear. Originating from Victoria, Australia in the early 1930s and introduced circa 1959, this tree has a vigorous growth, with young leaf color flushed with burgundy. With pleasingly sweet and tender fruit, it is great for both fresh eating and canning.

It is reliably self fruitful in some areas, but not as reliably self-fertile as its parent Bartlett. It can be harvested in late August and does not require cold storage for ripening. 700 chill hours.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Mature Height: 15'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: Late August - Mid September

Pollination: Can be considered self-fertile in some areas of the US - but we suggest something in bloom group 2 mid.
